About us

What is Doña Mara?

In 2014 there were several farmers in the area, who had blackberry farms for export; This is due to the fact that, in previous years, exporting companies did negotiations with them, but due to various factors they found themselves bankrupt; leaving farmers without a market for their produce.

At that time, Doña Mara, a woman from Santa Eduviges de Páramo, near Cerro de la Muerte, owned a plot of land where she planted blackberries with her husband and children. She was anxious to seek new markets for her product. Her children supported her initiative and that is why they created a company dedicated to selling the blackberries that were produced on their mother's farm. In addition to wanting to honor Doña Mara, the company sought out several producers in the area to help them market their crops in the center of the Pérez Zeledón canton.

The first logo created by the company, sought precisely to represent where these blackberries came from, and that is, the mountains that can be appreciated are precisely the Cerro de la Muerte, the place that gives rise to this undertaking. Even the first name that the company adopted was precisely "Moras Doña Mara", however; Due to the great demand for other products, the name was changed to “Frutas Doña Mara” and a more variety of fruits began to be marketed. Within the entire growth process of the company, the idea of starting to export was raised, but there was a problem regarding the name of the brand, due to the connotation that exists with the gangs of El Salvador and other countries in Central America,

The first client was from the Coopeagri supermarket chain in Pérez Zeledón; where in the beginning fresh packaged fruit was commercialized, and with the passage of time the diversification of products for sale was achieved, increasing the number of products and presentations to the consumer. The LUFERZ supermarket in Pérez Zeledón also gave its trust and is a client who has seen this venture grow.

In 2017, he joined the great family of the company, the line of frozen products, for food service through a distributor.

In 2020, the company entered the Auto Mercado SA supermarket chain, with the FROZ FRUT® brand and in 2021 it entered CADESUR, a supermarket chain in the southern part of the country.

The company little by little became a bridge between the rural area and consumers, in the center of the Pérez Zeledón canton, then in other parts of the country and currently seeks to be a bridge for products from Costa Rica and other countries to international level.
